Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim, Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton, Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling, and Trumbull First Selectman Vicki Tesoro were all re-elected, while State Rep. Fred Camillo is taking as Greenwich First Selectman from the retiring Peter Tesei.
Herbst served eight years as first selectman and twice attempted to be elected to a statewide office.
The latest rejection is apparently tied to an investigation of possible campaign finance violations.
The investigation puts into question whether the Westport exec's campaign will qualify for $1.35 million in public financing grants, which have been approved for fellow Republican contenders Mark Boughton and Tim Herbst.
Both political parties’ primaries will be held on Aug. 14; the general election will take place on Nov. 6.
Former Trumbull First Selectman Tim Herbst and Westport-based technology executive Steve Obstinik won enough votes from delegates to enable a primary election on Aug. 14. State Sen. Joe Markley of Southington was endorsed by the convention for lieutenant governor and Hartford pub owner Matthew M. Corey was endorsed to challenge Chris Murphy for the U.S. Senate.

The connection “will enhance Trumbull and the region and provide economic benefit to area businesses,” said MetroCOG Executive Director Matt Fulda.
“We’re in a position now where interest is turning into actual projects," says Trumbull Economic and Community Development Director Rina Bakalar.
Michael Handler is both Stamford's director of administration and volunteer director of New Canaan's Office of Emergency Management.
"Our focus will be on why we moved here, why we’ve stayed here, and how we can encourage new families to do the same," said Redgate.
Some high marks for the outgoing governor's attempts to fix the fiscal mess he inherited ... but actual accomplishments are few, according to observers.
