Senate Minority Leader Len Fasano (R-North Haven) called Lamont’s agenda “a disappointing display of one-party rule and partisan politics."
The usual mitigating practices (masks, social distancing) will still apply in all circumstances. “Obviously we’re dialing up the risk a little bit,” Gov. Ned Lamont said. “This is no time for us to lose our discipline.”
“There is a process for the governor to request an extension of his emergency powers and seek legislative approval," said Senate Minority Leader Len Fasano (R-North Haven). "That process has not happened yet."
“Even if it is more expensive,” declared State Sen. Julie Kushner (D-Danbury), “that’s the cost of doing business.”
While three of the bills were overwhelmingly approved, the fourth -- which includes a provision allowing civil lawsuits to be filed against police officers and municipalities in certain circumstances -- only passed at 9 a.m. today after much debate.
In addition, Lamont’s emergency powers and the executive orders he issued under those powers during the COVID-19 crisis are scheduled to expire on Sept. 9, meaning that the General Assembly must decide on the absentee ballot and extension of telehealth coverage questions by then.
Among other items, the Senate Democrats are looking to ban chokeholds and other “unnecessary” police actions.
The governor insisted that his new proposal "avoids the constitutional pitfalls of the prior proposal."
