Christie Stewart, director of Fairfield County’s Center for Housing Opportunity, said the legislation represents “an important step in ensuring that zoning decisions in our communities better reflect and uphold the values of inclusion and equity that so many Fairfield County and Connecticut residents stand behind."
Though he expressed some disappointment with some of the compromises taken to pass the bill, Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff (D-Norwalk) called it "a very important step on our road for Connecticut to shed itself from being the most segregated state in the nation."
“The more people who are attracted to what we’re trying to do will help us with our further development plans in the future," says Greenwich Communities CEO and Executive Director Anthony Johnson.
“While this might be a watered-down version, this is a huge boot in the door for state control over our towns that would eliminate that uniqueness that makes Connecticut so special,” said Rep. Laura Devlin (R-Fairfield).
Increasing the state's stock of affordable housing remains a contentious issue.
“They’re not bad ideas,” State Rep. Kimberly Fiorello (R-Greenwich) said this morning. “They could be really valid ideas, (but) do they have to be mandates?”
