Purdue announced in February that it would stop marketing its prescription painkillers in the U.S.
Virginia has become the latest state to sue Stamford-headquartered Purdue Pharma over its marketing and distribution of opioids.
"Purdue Pharma and its executives built a multibillion-dollar business based on deception and addiction," said Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey.
Bridgeport, Fairfield, and Newtown are among the complainants in a lawsuit against Purdue, Teva Pharmaceuticals USA Inc., Johnson & Johnson and Endo Health Solutions Inc.
The Danbury law firm lists pharmaceutical/medical device claims as one of its areas of expertise.
Bigal comes to Purdue from Teva Pharmaceuticals, where he most recently served as chief scientific officer for its specialty organization.

Fourteen states have filed lawsuits against Purdue Pharma, claiming its allegedly deceptive marketing of prescription opioids contributed to the ongoing opioid crisis.
“Big Pharma helped to fuel this epidemic by deceptively peddling these dangerous drugs and hooking millions of Americans in exchange for profit,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
Defendants include Stamford’s Purdue Pharma, as well as Teva Pharmaceuticals USA Inc., Johnson & Johnson and Endo Health Solutions Inc.
Last year, 70 people died in New Haven from opioid-related deaths.
New Jersey and Alaska are the latest states to file lawsuits against Purdue and other opioid manufacturers.
The company issued a statement acknowledging the probe and adding it was "committed to being part of the solution to our nation's opioid crisis."
The news comes as Cigna announces it will no longer cover OxyContin as a preferred option on its commercial drug lists.
