The bankruptcy proceedings could take over a year, according to lawyers for the Stamford-based OxyContin maker.

Legal officials in 27 other states, as well as attorneys for over 2,000 cities and counties, have tentatively agreed to a plan with the Stamford-based maker of OxyContin.
A Purdue spokeswoman maintains that the firm "believes a settlement that benefits the American public now is a far better path than years of wasteful litigation and appeals."
The Stamford-based OxyContin maker is facing 2,000-plus lawsuits over its marketing of opioids.
The proposed agreement also calls for members of the Sackler family to give up ownership of Purdue, according to reports.
Ducharme will be responsible for ongoing product development and identifying new research opportunities and ventures across multiple therapeutic areas.
“We are beginning to engage in discussions with the individuals who are responsible for this crisis,” James said in an interview with the Business Journal.
According to one email about the Stamford company's products, "if people die because they abuse it then good riddance."
Purdue Pharma's Craig Landau said the company wants to make this treatment "available as broadly and quickly as possible."
Although the Stamford company recently settled a lawsuit filed against it by Oklahoma for $270 million, Connecticut will not be settling its suit.
The Oklahoma Supreme Court rejected an appeal by Purdue Pharma to delay the state’s May trial against the company.
