Prior to this month, cannabis was only available to New York patients in ground form.

According to the state Department of Consumer Protection, as of May 2 there were 11,925 registered medical marijuana patients in Fairfield County.
“New Jersey is a watershed for the East Coast,” says Executive Chairman Boris Jordan. “New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut will follow suit and become recreational.”

The application for the 3,000-square-foot facility now goes to the state Department of Consumer Protection, which oversees the licensing process.
While federal law has made banking difficult for the medical marijuana industry, Cuomo's administration said it "stands ready to work with our chartered institutions to assist them in moving forward toward commencing operations in a safe and sound manner."
Newtown is the latest Fairfield County location to move forward with the possible creation of a medical marijuana dispensary.
The commission denied four other medical marijuana dispensary applications, citing concerns about traffic and safety as well as the size of the proposed locations.
