The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 7.5 percent in April - the lowest it has been since December 2008 - as payrolls increased by 165,000 and the government raised its prior projections for job gains in February and March.
Employers added 157,000 jobs in January, falling slightly below projections, as the U.S. unemployment rate increased to 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent in December.
The Department of Labor reported that first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits fell by 9,000 to 363,000 last week.
Since January, Connecticut employers have produced some 2,600 net new jobs, less than one-third of the amount of jobs created through the first nine months of 2011, according to data released by the state Department of Labor Oct. 18.
