An effort by Indian tribes to collaborate on a new casino on nontribal land in East Windsor received another setback this weekend.

Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen is warning the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes not to move forward with plans to build and open a new casino in East Windsor without federal regulatory approval.

At a ceremony yesterday, demolition of a shuttered movie theater began at the site that is planned for a 100,000-square-foot casino.

“A competitive process will bring Connecticut the best deal, in terms of jobs, economic development, community benefits and support for our local businesses,” start Rep. Chris Rosario said.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs needs to approve amendments to Connecticut’s gaming compacts with the Mashantucket Pequots and Mohegans, the tribes behind the East Windsor casino, which is not being built on a tribal reservation.
