The project is intended to use Amtrak's existing Hell Gate Line to bring Metro-North trains to four new stations in the east Bronx, and then into Queens where they’ll proceed through an East River tunnel and under Manhattan into Penn Station.
Local, county and state officials joined with MTA representatives at the White Plains station on Nov. 1 to formally mark the completion of the project that began in 2018.
The 598-space garage will increase parking availability at the station by more than 80%.
The MTA approved the rehabilitation project for the Third Avenue Bridge in Mount Vernon in December of 2019, and began demolishing the original, 121-year old bridge in April of 2020.
“We need a massive, likely bi-partisan plan" to fully fund the initiative, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said. “And we need the two Joes – Biden and (U.S. Sen.) Manchin (D-West Virginia) -- to get behind it.”
On June 21, Metro-North will increase peak service on the Harlem, Hudson and New Haven lines to 67% of pre-Covid levels from the current 63%, with plans to up that number to 83% at the end of August.
Ridership on Metro-North is still only about 25% of what it was before the pandemic hit, while the number of trains is about 63% of the pre-pandemic schedule.
