The project initially received approval in 2017, but three residents filed a lawsuit alleging that the city council changed the zoning to allow the project to move forward without giving sufficient notice.
The company also operates two facilities in Stamford.
The property was once home to Walter Law, a wealthy vice president of the W&J Sloane furniture company in New York City.
“It’s probably one of the largest vacant land sites in Mount Vernon,” Eric Newhouse said of the land, which was bought about a year ago for the project.
"I cold-called Atrium Stamford in 2016 and asked the program director if I could come in – I had no idea what to expect," said Sutcliffe.
"Maplewood is excited to begin work on the construction of our newest senior living community and appreciate the town's assistance in making this project a reality," said Gregory D. Smith, president and CEO of Maplewood Senior Living.
The Westchester-based group has designed, built and now operates three assisted living facilities.
