“When I came into office (in 2011) everything was still being done on paper,” Denise Merrill says. “There was shockingly little being done online.”
“This modest change to the process will make it a little easier for local election officials as they prepare for Election Day," Secretary of the State Denise Merrill said. "No one should have to choose between protecting their health and casting their ballot.”
While three of the bills were overwhelmingly approved, the fourth -- which includes a provision allowing civil lawsuits to be filed against police officers and municipalities in certain circumstances -- only passed at 9 a.m. today after much debate.
“Nobody should need to make a decision between their health and their right to vote,” the governor said. “We must guarantee access to the ballot, and this is a way to do that during these extraordinary circumstances. I do not take this decision lightly, and it is with the public health and welfare of residents in mind.”
A group of 11 State Senate Democrats has sent a letter to Gov. Ned Lamont questioning the prudence of starting to reopen some state businesses on May 20 – concerns that the governor tried to assuage during today’s briefing.
“Changing an election date is not something we do lightly,” tweeted Secretary of the State Denise Merrill, “it’s a recognition of the severity & nature of this crisis, and more steps may be necessary to guarantee that every CT voter has an opportunity to cast their ballot.”
