Edgemont teens spearhead technology volunteer organization

Last year, Edgemont Junior/Senior High School students Josh Topf and Avery Yee formed Tech Angels, a volunteer organization that helps senior citizens learn to use technology. The organization holds sessions at the Theodore Young Community Center in White Plains every other week and welcomes all seniors seeking guidance.

The program aims to help seniors feel comfortable in our technologically focused world, as Yee and Topf’s experience assisting their grandparents showed them that seniors often face challenges with technology. While teaching his grandfather how to use his iPhone and iPad, Topf realized that there are likely many other people who need help using technology.

Explaining the inspiration behind Tech Angels in an interview with Pace University Professor Dr. Pauline Mosley and Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner, Topf said, “It occurred to me that there are probably a lot of other people around the same age who have similar issues, but might not have a child or grandchild to help them.”

In addition to the sessions in White Plains, a Tech Angels initiative was established in Larchmont. In the future, the program aims to expand to various locations across Westchester County.
