Iona offers new master’s degree program in sports media

Iona College this fall will launch a program in sports communication and media leading to a Master of Arts degree on its New Rochelle campus.

Iona officials said students will be trained to function at the highest level of professional competence and integrity in all aspects of sports media, including live game reporting and producing, TV and radio production and writing, producing a sports documentary and all digital facets of the multimedia industry.

The evening program “is geared to train students in a personal manner in a professional setting,” said Mike Damergis, program coordinator. “Our graduate students will create content that will be broadcast on the Fantasy Sports Network and they will have an incredible opportunity to produce live events under the direction of Iona Athletics and ESPN3.”

The program blends traditional coursework with engagement in real-world broadcasting of professional and collegiate sports. Damergis said advanced students will cover professional teams throughout Westchester County, Connecticut and New York City.

“Learn by doing is the motto here,” he said.

Sports communication and media classes will be taught by industry professionals who will create opportunities for students through internships and networking.

Iona officials said students completing the program will have a solid portfolio of professional work they can showcase to potential employers.
