STAMFORD – The new Catholic Charities Stamford: Home of New Covenant Center at 507 Shippan Ave. will be named the Cohen Family Building in recognition of a $2.5 million gift from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation, led by philanthropist Alex Cohen.
The gift provides significant support for Catholic Charities Stamford’s mission to provide food assistance, case management, senior nutrition services, and workforce development programs for thousands of individuals each year. The new building expands the organization’s capacity and brings key hunger prevention and social services together under one roof.
“We are deeply grateful to the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation and Alex Cohen for her remarkable generosity and belief in our mission,” said Mike Donoghue, executive director, Catholic Charities of Fairfield County. “Their support will help ensure that the Cohen Family Building serves as a place of hope, dignity, and opportunity for thousands of our neighbors in Stamford.”
The move to Shippan Avenue from 174 Richmond Ave. marks a new chapter for Catholic Charities Stamford and the New Covenant Center, which has served the Stamford community since 1978. The expanded 13,500-square-foot building will enhance daily meal services, food pantry operations, case management, and job training programs. It also strengthens partnerships with neighboring organizations such as Americares (primary healthcare), Building One Community (immigration and legal services), and Liberation Programs (addiction and behavioral health counseling), expanding access to services that promote greater stability and self-sufficiency.
Founded in 2001, the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation has awarded more than $1.5 billion under Alex Cohen’s leadership. Guided by its mission of “inspired giving,” the foundation supports underserved communities, women’s health, sustainability, the arts, and children.
