Donald Trump was reported to be safe after being rushed away from an area where gunshots were fired on Sunday, according to law enforcement and other sources. The FBI in a statement referred to the incident as an assassination attempt. The incident occurred at the Trump International Golf Club at West Palm Beach.

“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement that did not provide additional details.

Trump subsequently posted a statement of social media saying that he was okay. A person has been detained in connection with the incident, according to law enforcement. A Secret Service agent noticed a rifle barrel sticking out from an area with trees and bushes and opened fire. It is reported that the suspected shooter ran to his car and drove away. However, a witness provided law enforcement with a picture of the car including the car’s license plate information and the information was broadcast by law enforcement and the car was stopped on a highway and the suspect was detained.

The shooter was positioned in a tree line that is one or two golf holes ahead of where Trump was playing.

West Palm Beach officials said that they were notified by the Secret Service at about 1:30 that shots had been fired. A representative of the Secret Service told a news conference that one of its personnel opened fire at a gunman located near the property line of the golf course. He said that the Secret Service previously increased the assets deployed to protect Trump.

Jeffrey Veltri, agent on charge of the FBI’s Miami Office, asked members of the public who may have information related to the incident to contact the FBI.

Two backpacks were recovered at the scene.

An AR-15 or AK-47-style rifle has been recovered that had a telescopic sight. Trump was reported to be about 300 yards away from the shooter. A video camera that had been mounted on a fence with the apparent objective of recording the incident was recovered.

The former president was playing golf at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. The course was immediately locked down, according to a source familiar. Trump was taken from the golf course to his resort Mar-a-Lago by motorcade.

A source said that Trump was between holes five and six on the golf course when the shooting occurred.

The Secret Service said on X that it is working with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to investigate a protective incident involving Trump.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been briefed on the security incident involving Trump and they are both “relieved to know that he is safe,” according to the White House.

“I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America,” Harris wrote on the social media platform X.

Biden and Harris, both of whom are in Washington, D.C., with no public events Sunday, will be kept updated by their team.
