IBM tells managers to return to the office or lose their jobs
IBM (NYSE:IBM) is giving its U.S.-based managers the ultimatum of returning full-time to their office or to leave the company.
CNN reported the Armonk-headquartered company is seeking the end of remote work. According to a Jan. 16 internal memo from Senior Vice President John Granger, executives and managers will now be expected to be in-person at least three days a week, and remote workers living more than 50 miles from an office have until August to relocate closer to their workplace or risk losing their jobs. Exceptions will be made for employees with medical issues or who are on active-duty military service.
Several IBM offices closed since the pandemic, including locations in Iowa, Philadelphia and central New York state. The new order follows comments made last May by CEO Arvind Krishna that off-site workers would be less likely to receive promotions.
