Hudson Valley attorney Greg Sobo has watched his firm”™s real estate work ebb with the admission “you can imagine,” but he waves no white flag of surrender. Forty years in business, a varied practice, a strong client base and the belief federal money is about to kickstart financing and refinancing have him hopeful.
Sobo was initially attracted to the field of law for its competitive nature. There were winners, losers and strategies determining the ultimate outcome and he liked that.
Sobo witnessed his attorney father always finding the time to sit down to dinner and to attend his sporting events, which he said “made life look pretty good.”
He entered into a partnership with father Gary Sobo and the two are now celebrating Sobo & Sobo L.L.C.”™s 40th anniversary with their staff and with partner James Harris.
Gary Sobo specializes in real estate law and Greg in personal injury, but the firm as a whole concentrates on both as well as general law within their practices in Middletown, Pine Bush, Warwick and Newburgh.
But, like any business in recessionary conditions, Greg Sobo expressed concerns common to many minds these days: the uncertainty of where the road will lead and the inevitable drop in business in some areas of practice.
Asked if the firm”™s real estate practice has been personally affected, the answer was yes.
“Definitely,” Greg Sobo said. “The base of the firm has been real estate, so you can imagine how it”™s been affected by the climate. But I feel that we”™re thriving in this economic climate, there aren”™t as many closings, but we have such a good client base that we”™re hopeful.”
It”™s that drive and optimism that evidently powered the law firm in reaching a major milestone.
And, with a new stimulus plan unfolding, the business of law won”™t go untouched.
“I think the president”™s plan will make it easier to refinance or re-contract, so we expect it to have favorable outcomes in the real estate portion of the business,” Sobo said. “As far as personal injury, people get hurt in any economic climate, so I don”™t see that being affected.”
Greg said he likes the path the firm is on and wants to continue providing the best service possible.
