Nonprofits join for affordable housing

Rockland Housing Action Coalition and the Community Preservation Corp. are partnering on the first quality-built affordable housing for families in the village of Haverstraw.

Murphy Manor Apartments will be built on Route 9W within walking distance of New Main Street shopping. Twenty-five two-bedroom units ranging from 850 to 1,022 square feet as well as one 530-square-foot studio, are scheduled for the new building, which will include a community room, laundry facilities and on-site parking.

Ginsburg Development Companies will be the general contractor as part of its commitment to Rockland and the village to construct and renovate approximately 80 units of affordable housing in Haverstraw. Construction is designed to meet New York energy conservation construction code requirements which will include central heating and air conditioning, high-performance windows and doors, and water-conserving fixtures.

The new apartment complex will be managed by RHAC. The nonprofit has already collaborated with Community Preservation Corp. (CPC) on senior housing in Spring Valley.

CPC”™s Hudson Valley regional director Sadie McKeown is “very pleased to partner with Rockland Housing again to fill this much needed housing gap in Haverstraw.”

The project received more than $4 million in tax credits and a $1.352 million grant from Housing Trust Funds, as well as a federal Home Loan Bank grant for $520,000 to construct Murphy Manor. Putnam County Savings Bank is also participating in the project.

Since its inception in 1974, Community Preservation Corp. has invested more than $7 billion in more than 137,000 units of housing in underserved areas.
