Cardboard plant heads to Wallkill
President Container will move its operations from three Moonachie, N.J., locations and centralize them in the former Wakefern distribution site in the town of Wallkill.
The 44-acre property will get an infusion of $48 million in improvements. The plant is expected to be fully operational by January 2011.
“This is a major economic accomplishment for the county, and we are delighted to welcome President Container,” said Maureen Halahan, president and CEO of the Orange County Partnership. “The company searched the Northeast for a new location and selected Orange County for its business-friendly environment and accessibility.”
President Container will refurbish the Wallkill property into a fully automated “super plant,” a 500,000-square-foot facility featuring 70 dock doors.
“We”™ve outgrown our facilities in New Jersey and had launched an extensive search two years ago to find a site where we could expand our business,” said President Container principal Larry Grossbard, whose father founded the company more than 60 years ago.
Strategically, Wallkill”™s proximity to upstate New York, Connecticut, New England and Pennsylvania “offers us an excellent geographic location to allow us to reach new markets in a 200-mile radius,” added Rich Grossbard, co-principal of the company. “Orange County”™s central location and outstanding highway access will let us serve those customers and increase our revenue and market share.”
The new plant will add approximately $9 million a year in payroll dollars and approximately $750,000 in annual taxes and other payments to local governments and schools.
“This project could not have happened without the teamwork of all of our economic development partners, including Hudson Valley Economic Development Corp., CBRE, Panattoni Development, Empire State Development, Orange County IDA, Orange County Executive Ed Diana, town of Wallkill Supervisor John Ward and town of Wallkill Engineer Dick McGoey,” said Halahan.
