Medical college lands multimillion-dollar grant
New York Medical College will open the Hudson Valley Biotechnology Center for Disaster Medicine and Emerging Infections with the aid of a $3.25 million state grant.
The funding from the New York state Senate Gen*NY*sis program will be used to upgrade and modernize an existing building on the college”™s Valhalla campus to house the biotech facility. The grant was announced Thursday by state Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, and Senate Majority Conference Leader John Sampson. The state program funds public, nonprofit and private academic research institutions pursuing high-tech and biotechnology-related research that will create new high-quality jobs statewide.
The New York Medical College center is expected to create business opportunities and scientific partnerships for Westchester”™s growing private biotech cluster and recruitment opportunities for the region”™s pool of health professionals.
The 150-year-old school”™s medical research departments currently specialize in cardiovascular disease, cancer, disaster medicine, kidney disease, the neurosciences and infectious diseases. It is one of the county”™s largest employers, with more than 3,000 faculty and staff.
“The center will undoubtedly have a great impact on the health of all New Yorkers,” Dr. Karl P. Adler, president and CEO of New York Medical College, said in a prepared statement. “It will be located in Westchester County, home to the largest concentration of biotechnology companies in the state, and will provide an unparalleled opportunity for scientific partnerships and collaborations with biotechnology companies and other institutions, which will stimulate the economy of this academically and scientifically rich region.”
