Family medicine resident joins Phelps medical group

Dr. Anesh Badiwala, a member of the first class that will graduate in June from the family medicine residency program at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, has accepted a position with Phelps Medical Associates, the hospital’s primary and specialty care medical group, the hospital in Sleepy Hollow announced.

Badiwala started with the residency program in 2012 after earning a medical degree at the American University of Antigua and set a personal goal to secure a position with Phelps, he said in the hospital announcement. “The program has accelerated my skills and knowledge with the support of exemplary faculty and medical staff,” he said.

“From the beginning,” said Dr. Shantie Harkison, director of the family medicine residency program, “a fundamental goal of our program has been to cultivate the best and brightest family physician leaders for our community through innovation and partnership. We are very proud of Dr. Badiwala for being one of the first residents to fulfill that vision.”

The residency program at Phelps received national accreditation in 2011 and was designed to help meet the growing shortage of primary care physicians in the U.S. and in Westchester County, hospital officials said. Called the NYMC Phelps Family Medicine Residency Program, it is a collaboration between New York Medical College in Valhalla, Phelps Memorial Hospital Center and Open Door Family Medical Centers, headquartered in Ossining.
