Connecticut health care workers union plans strike against group homes serving disabled clients

Connecticut”™s largest health care workers union is planning to go on strike next week against six nonprofit agencies that operate group homes serving approximately 1,500 developmentally disabled clients.

According to a CT Mirror report, more than 1,700 members of New England Health Care Employees Union, SEIU 1199NE, are scheduling their strike on May 24 against the nonprofits hired by the state Department of Developmental Services. Most of the union members who plan to go on strike have been working with contracts that expired March 31, and the union stated it is seeking “living wages, affordable health insurance” and better retirement benefits for its members ”“ striking workers would include a wide range of occupations including dietary workers, maintenance staff, assistant teachers, behavior paraprofessionals and some licensed practical nurses.

“Connecticut must end poverty for all caregivers,” said Rob Baril, the union president. “Group home workers keep showing up to work because they love caring for others, because they believe that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities should have access to the opportunities and supports that let all of us enjoy a meaningful life.”
