Michael Wolin, a senior researcher at New York Medical College in Valhalla, has been awarded a $383,180 federal grant to aid his lab work in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension.
The grant from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services was recently announced by U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey, the senior Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee.
“Cutting-edge medical research in the Lower Hudson Valley is not only paving the way for new treatments and breakthroughs, it is also one of the engines of our region”™s economy,” Lowey, a Harrison resident, said. “That”™s why I am so pleased that New York Medical College is receiving this important federal investment as it works to identify treatments for a disease affecting so many Americans.”
Pulmonary hypertension is a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in the lungs and the right side of a person”™s heart and can lead to heart failure.
Catharine Crea, associate dean for research administration at New York Medical, said the funding also will support another investigator and two doctoral candidates in Wolin”™s laboratory.
