NY attorney general investigates Sandy-related donations
In an effort to ensure Hurricane Sandy-related donations are serving the right purpose, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman asked 75 nonprofits to hand over their fundraising records.
Schneiderman’s Charities Bureau is compiling the information for an online report to not only improve transparency, but also donor confidence.
The bureau sent letters to the charities requesting a response no later than Dec. 11. They were instructed to include details about the money they raised and how funds have been spent so far.
The bureau is also requesting information about any services designed to help victims, funds given to other organizations, and plans for any surplus.
