Monroe seeks to acquire 65 acres for open space

The Town of Monroe is partnering with the Aspetuck Land Trust on an initiative to preserve 65 acres of local land as open space.

According to a report in The Monroe Sun, the land is owned by the Benedict Family, who operate Benedict’s Home & Garden store. The proposed preservation space does not include the store property.

First Selectman Ken Kellogg said the land was previously identified by the Town Council’s Open Space Preservation & Acquisition Committee for open space due to its location near Wolfe Park and Great Hollow Lake. The Town Council approved a Letter of Intent on Sept. 26, and a purchase price will be determined following appraisals to the property.

The land purchase is contingent upon grant fund applications and additional municipal approvals, as well as from voters in a town meeting.
