Manhattanville professor named state deputy secretary of education

Manhattanville College professor Jere Hochman was recently named the state deputy secretary of education, Manhattanville officials said.

Hochman, who teaches the “Culture, Politics and Educational Change” and “Community Relations and Education” courses at Manhattanville, was named to the position by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Oct. 28. Hochman has also served as superintendent of the Bedford Central School District since 2008.

“It is a superb day for New York State to know that Dr. Hochman, an exceptional school district partner for our Changing Suburbs Institute, has been named deputy secretary,” Manhattanville School of Education Dean Shelley Wepner said.  “His optimism for educating all children, his unwavering belief in teachers and his firsthand and long-term experiences as a teacher and administrator in K through 12 education will contribute to new beginnings in appreciating the value of our educational system.”

Hochman, known for his vocal criticism of the Common Core curriculum implemented throughout New York State schools, also previously served as a teacher, principal and superintendent in school districts in St. Louis and Amherst, Massachusetts.

New York State School Boards Association Executive Director Timothy G. Kremer said his organization has worked with Hochman extensively throughout Hochman’s tenure at Bedford.

“With four decades of experience as a superintendent, Dr. Hochman will bring a practical perspective to major policy matters before the governor and state Legislature,” Kremer said. “His experience, thoughtful approach and commitment to our public schools make him an outstanding choice for this important position.”
