Ex-Rep. Mondaire Jones seeks to regain congressional seat
Former U.S. Rep. Mondaire Jones announced he will be seeking a return to Congress.
A Democrat, Jones was elected to the 17th District Congress seat in 2020. But when New York”™s congressional delegation lost a seat to redistricting for the 2022 election, Jones ceded his district to Rep. Sean Maloney, the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Jones ran in the Democratic primary for the 10th District and lost to attorney Dan Goldman. Maloney lost the 17th District to Republican Mike Lawler.
During his single term in the House, Jones gained attention for supporting progressive strategies including the Green New Deal and expanding the number of justices on the U.S. Supreme Court. After leaving office, Jones served on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and appeared as a commentator on CNN.
“I”™ve never been Washington’s choice,” Jones said in his Twitter announcement of his candidacy. “It’s because I stand up to corruption. I battle with Republicans trying to overthrow our democracy and ban abortion, even as I push my party to fight harder for working people. I’m running to finish the work I began.”
