Burke, SUNY Purchase get federal grants

Burke Rehabilitation & Research in White Plains and SUNY Purchase College will receive grants from the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health.

Rep. Nita Lowey, D-Harrison, announced the grants ”“ with $329,000 to Burke and $190,000 to Purchase College.

“Groundbreaking scientific research happening in Westchester and Rockland greatly benefits our community,” she said.

Burke will study Alzheimer”™s, with the grant funding a pilot clinical trial to see if benfotiamine is an effective treatment for the disease (the medicine is effective in animal models). Purchase”™s grant will be used for a program that looks to increase the number of minority, low-income and first-generation students transferring to four-year colleges after completing their associate degrees.
