Astorino to run on ‘Stop Common Core’ line

Rob Astorino will run on a third ballot line, “Stop Common Core,” in this fall”™s gubernatorial race against incumbent Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat.

Astorino, already to appear on the Republican and Conservative party lines, announced Tuesday he expected to collect the 15,000 signatures necessary to create the new ballot line, which seeks to home in on the backlash to the Common Core educational curriculum.

The Republican candidate, who is the Westchester County executive, has been critical of the curriculum and said earlier this year that his two school-aged children would opt out of exams related to the program.

Earlier this year, Cuomo formed an implementation committee amid backlash from the program as parents said the Common Core was flawed and pro-teacher groups decried its test scores being used as a measurement for teacher performance.
