Pizza promotion: Buy now, pay after your death

A pizzeria in New Zealand has taken the concept of “buy now, pay later” (BNPL) to a fatalistic extreme by offering customers the chance to purchase a pizza and pay for it after they”™re dead.

According to a report in the online NewsHub site, Hell Pizza”™s new “AfterLife Pay” was designed as a riff on the controversial BNPL schemes that have created new debt burdens across New Zealand. In the pizzeria”™s plan, a select number of people will be invited to participate by signing an amendment to their wills that allows for the cost of the pizza to be collected upon death. No interest or fees will be charged to the heirs of the deceased pizza lovers when repayment is due.

“We’re seeing a growing number of people using the schemes to buy essential items like food, and we think it’s taking it a step too far when you’ve got quick service restaurants like ours being asked to offer BNPL for what is considered a treat – especially when you consider people are falling behind in their payments and 10.5% of loans in New Zealand are in arrears,” said Hell Pizza CEO Benn Cumming, who added that 666 people in New Zealand and other 666 in Australia will be invited to participate.
