Store’s theme: from India, with style
Sitara, a Stamford-based jewelry maker and designer, is differentiating, adding home and lifestyle to the Indian-artisan line.
“Our development model envisions a sustainable socio-economic system that encourages community growth by stimulating the desire for handmade items,” said Linda Singh, founder and president of Sitara. “The core of our operations is an online marketplace that empowers people to earn a living by making beautiful, in-demand goods.”
Singh said the Sitara Collections specialize in handmade lifestyle accessories, jewelry, and gifts all imported from India. She said the design-focused products are created by skilled artisans who use traditional craftsmanship to create contemporary works of art. By adding more offerings, Singh said they are able to support more artisans.
“We named the company Sitara, which translates to ”˜star,”™ because the quality and innovative design shine through,” said Singh. “But the best part is that we’re able to combine exceptional products with a philosophy of social responsibility.”
According to Singh, Sitara Collections encourages a policy of fair trade by connecting makers with buyers.
“It ensures that the products are properly marketed and the artisans are compensated adequately,” said Singh.
Singh said the company gives back a portion of the net proceeds to underprivileged children in India through the Sitara Foundation.
“It’s our way of adding a little love to every purchase,” said Singh.
