Stamford to acquire former site of Sacred Heart Academy
The city of Stamford is expected to acquire a downtown school at 200 Strawberry Hill Ave. after completing a yearlong process to buy it. The city plans to close the deal for $9.75 million.
The 10.8-acre historic property is the former site of Sacred Heart Academy, which closed in 2006. It was last occupied by The Stanwich School, a campus for seventh- through 12th-graders. In 2012, the site was assessed for $14.7 million.
In a January interview with the Fairfield County Business Journal, Mayor David Martin said, “The property is a chance to preserve part of Stamford”™s history and character. It will protect open space in an area that has become highly developed over the years.”
The city has yet to determine whether the site will be used for a new school or for an alternative public use.
Martin and Sister Susan Cunningham, president of The Sisters of St. Joseph Corp., are expected to sign the final paperwork Thursday afternoon.
