Stamford company expands in Houston

Stamford-based MxEnergy Holdings Inc. is hiring 40 people for a sales and support office in Houston, where it already employs about 100 workers, about half its total staff.

MxEnergy sells fixed and variable-priced contracts for electricity and natural gas to the equivalent of 630,000 residential customers in New York, Georgia, Ohio and 10 other states. In May, MxEnergy began selling electricity in Connecticut.

The company was founded in 1999 by Jeff Mayer, who previously led the energy futures department of Goldman Sachs & Co. MxEnergy employs about 50 people at its Stamford headquarters.

For its 2007 fiscal year ending June 30, MxEnergy lost $14 million on $704 million in revenue.
