Report: UConn seeks proposals for campus relocation

After announcing plans to relocated its West Hartford campus to downtown Hartford, the University of Connecticut has reportedly received proposals for 13 possible locations.

The university hasn’t released information on the proposed sites, but reports have centered around the old Hartford Times building, the Constitution Plaza development and properties on Windsor Street and Main Street.

The proposed relocation was announced in concert with the Next Generation Connecticut plan to invest $1.5 billion in state funds over 10 years in the science, technology, engineering and math fields, new facilities and additional faculty.

Earlier this week the city of Hartford withdrew an offer to relocate the campus to a city-owned lot on Main Street on the northern edge of the downtown, according to the Hartford Courant. The city’s director of development services, Thomas E. Deller, told the publication the city decided it would be able to work better with the university if it wasn’t among the bidders for a site.

UConn has estimated the relocation will cost $25 million. When consummated, the move will bring about 2,100 students and 60 faculty to downtown Hartford.
