Politics in brief

State Sen. Sam Caligiuri confirmed he is considering dropping out of the race for U.S. Senate to run instead for the seat of U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy, who represents the fifth district, including Danbury.

In a Quinnipiac University poll released in mid-November, Caligiuri was running far behind Republican frontrunner Rob Simmons of Stonington and Linda McMahon, the former CEO of Stamford-based World Wrestling Entertainment Inc.

A resident of Waterbury who became acting mayor after the 2001 arrest of former Mayor Philip Giordano, Caligiuri is an attorney today in the Hartford office of Day Pitney L.L.P., focusing on insurance regulation and municipal finance.

Litchfield resident Mark Greenberg announced plans to run the Republican nomination to square off against Murphy.

A graduate of Cornell University, Greenberg founded Adirondack Radio Telephone, which provided mobile services in upstate New York including during the Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, N.Y. The company was acquired in 1983 by Page America Group, which subsequently sold its assets to Metrocall more than a decade ago before declaring bankruptcy.

Greenberg then founded MGRE, which has focused on converting multi-unit residential buildings in New York City to cooperative ownership.
