Lamont orders flags at half-mast for Sandy Hook anniversary
Gov. Ned Lamont has ordered the lowering of U.S. and Connecticut flags to half-staff from sunrise to sunset today in remembrance of the 20 children and six adults who killed 11 years ago in the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.
The governor’s office also noted that since protocol requires no flag should fly higher than the U.S. flag, all other flags – including state, municipal, corporate or otherwise – should also be lowered during this same duration of time.
“The tragedy that occurred on this day 11 years ago is one of the worst in our history, but in its aftermath, we witnessed an unprecedented outpouring of support from all over the country, spreading a message of love and unity that we must work to protect and reinforce,” Lamont said in a press statement. “In the memories of the 20 innocent children and six devoted educators whose lives were taken all too soon, I strongly urge the people of Connecticut to dedicate ourselves to being sources of love, healing, joy, and humanity – not just on this anniversary, but every day.”
