Fed contracts add up for United Rentals

In its first full year under a U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) contract, the federal government became United Rental Inc.”™s largest customer in 2006.

United Rentals, which is based in Greenwich, bills itself as the largest equipment rental company in the world, and says it is the only national rental company with a GSA contract.

The company did not specify a precise figure for revenue generated from government agencies, except to say it amounted to less than 1 percent of its total sales of $3.6 billion in 2006.

In April, United Rentals announced the pending retirement of Wayland Hicks, its chief executive officer, and revealed it hired an investment bank to explore strategic options, including a possible sale of the company.
