Collapsed roofs raise concerns after storm

As the number of collapsed roofs in Connecticut surpasses 16, officials are warning residents and building owners to clear off snow from their roofs.

Citing a historic amount of snow from the weekend’s blizzard and the aging inventory of buildings in the state, state officials, including Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, say the risk of collapsed roofs is high from buildings being unable to support the snow’s weight. Malloy has urged municipals to inspect every school roof.

“I think it’s a big risk,” Malloy said at a storm briefing in Branford. “We’re going to pound away at superintendents to make sure their maintenance people are up on those school roofs, clearing drains and then watching the structure itself.”
