Cigna expands accountable care program
Cigna Corp. recently announced an expansion of it’s accountable-care program in Fairfield County, which rewards doctors for improved patient outcomes.
An experiment in lowering medical costs, the program gives primary care doctors extra incentives to provide preventative care and additional coordination services for patients.
In a new partnership with the Greenwich Physicians Association Inc. and PriMed L.L.C., more than 12,000 Cigna customers in the county will be able to participate in the accountable-care program for no additional cost.
A key component of the program includes greater patient data analysis, which can identify patients who are at a greater risk of readmission, are overdue for an appointment or have skipped a prescription refill. Care coordinators can also refer patients to additional support programs like diabetes management, weight loss or tobacco cessation.
The partnerships are Cigna’s fifth and sixth accountable care initiatives in Connecticut, pushing the company’s national tally up to 86 programs.
“Through this collaboration with Cigna, our doctors have access to more complete data that will help them provide more coordinated care, which means more opportunities to improve patient health,” said Glenn Gandelman, president of Greenwich Physicians, in a press release. “Better health outcomes and better-satisfied patients are what this collaboration is all about.”
