Barbers now a cut above with new 2nd-story shop

Classic Barber, a new family owned barber shop, opened last week at 396 Greenwich Ave.

Co-owned by brothers, John and Tony Merrola, they grew up in the family business, working at Subway Barber in Greenwich.

Subway was founded by their father, Giuseppe Merrola, in 1974.

The new shop is a 1,100-square-foot lease.

According to Tony Merrola the challenge for the family, with such a long Greenwich tradition, was to find affordable space in the affluent town.

According to the Merrolas, the shop”™s location on the second floor enabled them keep a reasonable rent yet move closer to the heart of the avenue.

“We”™re excited about the space,” Tony Merrola said. “We”™re in the middle of all the action in Greenwich, close to the train, offices and stores.”

Classic Barber has also installed special chairs for children in the shape of cars and airplanes and will also serve coffee and espresso to their patrons.

Classic Barber will be open five days a week, closed Sundays and Mondays.

Giuseppe Merrola came from Salerno, Italy in 1973, and will continue to cut hair with his sons at the new location.

“I am so pleased that my sons are carrying on the family tradition,” he said.
