AG cites illegal dumps

A Milford waste-disposal business stands accused of running unauthorized dumps, one in Stratford and a second in Milford.

State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has requested court injunctions to shut down what he says are illegal dumps operated by Associated Carting Inc. at 520 Success Ave. in Stratford and at 990 Naugatuck Ave. in Milford.

Acting on a tip, Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection inspectors visited the Stratford site and discovered a dozen containers filled with trash and construction debris. Inspectors said containers were marked with the logos of Associated Carting or its affiliate company D.C. Waste Management.

“Associated Carting is up to its neck in garbage and legal problems,” said Blumenthal in a prepared statement. “We will aggressively pursue every penalty possible.”

In separate news, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency bowed to pressure from Stratford officials and residents and said it would consider alternatives for excavating contaminated soil on at least 20 properties once occupied by Raymark Industries and containing it in a centralized dump.
