Upcoming Thames & Hudson book supports Ukraine’s culture

On Dec. 6, Thames & Hudson will publish”¯“Treasures of Ukraine: A Nation”™s Cultural Heritage” ($40, 256 pages, 267 illustrations). 

Showcasing more than 100 objects and buildings ”“ from Byzantine icons and wooden churches to gold-domed cathedrals, folk art and avant-garde masterpieces ”“ the book”¯chronicles the rich, varied heritage of a country whose people, culture, landmarks and artworks are facing destruction and devastation. Artists, curators and critics explain the significance of the pieces, revealing the nation”™s colorful past and its effect on the present.”¯ 

Organized chronologically ”“ from the development of ancient cultures like Trypillia and Scythia to early states such as Kyvian Rus and the Cossack Hetmanate; from the dawn of modernism to the striking contemporary paintings and political artworks being produced today ”“ and illustrated with more than 260 color images,”¯“Treasures of Ukraine” shines a light on key periods of the country”™s history and reminds us all that art and monuments are powerful sources of collective memory and identity.”¯ ”¯ 

Proceeds from this book will go to PEN Ukraine to help Ukrainian authors in need. A proportion of the funds will be diverted to support museums in Ukraine that have sustained damage as a result of Russian bombardment, to assist them with construction efforts and to rebuild their collections.
