Forecasting the Oscars

What roles do critical and popular acclaim play in determining “The Academy Awards,” which air 8 p.m. Sunday, March 12, on ABC? Online casino guide Japan-101 looked at the films that are up for Best Picture at the 2023 Oscars and combined the critics”™ and fans”™ reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes site to reveal the best rated.”¯But best rated doesn”™t necessarily translate into Best Picture. While “Top Gun: Maverick,” the sequel to Tom Cruise”™s “Top Gun,” may have been top rated, with a combined score of 97.5%, Japan-101 concluded that “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” with Michelle Yeoh as a laundromat owner trying to save the multiverse as different versions of herself, may well be the winner. It”™s combined score of 91.5% is close to that of last year”™s winner, “CODA,” about a hearing student”™s pursuit of music in a deaf family, which came in with 92.5%.

Coming in third in the list of Oscars nominees is the German remake of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” about a group of friends who enlist to fight in World War I. It was just slightly behind “Everything Everywhere All at Once” with a 90.5% rating.”¯

”¯Rounding out the rest of the best are “The Fabelmans” (87.5%); “The Banshees of Inisherin” (85.5%), tied with “Elvis” and “Women Talking”; “Avatar: The Way of Water” (84%); “Tár” (82%) and “Triangle of Sadness” (71%).

A spokesperson for Japan-101 said: “It”™s interesting how much the ratings vary from film to film. Often audiences might look at a rating to determine if they”™ll watch a film. The higher a rating, the more successful it”™s likely to be.

”¯“All the films average quite highly, though a 26.5% gap between ”˜Triangle of Sadness”™ and ”˜Top Gun: Maverick”™ is quite significant.

”¯“Based on last year”™s winner, though, neither are in contention as the data indicates that ”˜Everything Everywhere All at Once”™ and ”˜All Quiet on the Western Front”™ are most likely to win.

”¯“If the audience”™s chose the best and worst films, it”™s clear things would be very different to the critics”™ choices.” ”¯The top three critics”™ picks were “Top Gun” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” (tied), “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Fabelmans.” The top three audience picks were “Top Gun,” “Elvis” and “Avatar.”

While opinions differ, let”™s just hope there”™s no need for the Academy-hired crisis team to intervene in any Will Smith-style altercation.
