Fairfield University holds Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation

Professor and social justice activist Karsonya “Kaye” Wise Whitehead, Ph.D., will be the speaker for Fairfield University”™s 2023 Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation, which will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. The theme for this year”™s annual MLK observance is”¯“Social Justice Now.” 

Whitehead is an associate professor of communication and African and African American Studies at Loyola University Maryland and the founding director of The Karson Institute for Race, Peace and Social Justice. She”¯hosts the award-winning radio show”¯“Today with Dr. Kaye””¯on WEAA/88.9 FM and is the recent recipient of the Vernon Jarrett Medal for Journalistic Excellence for her reporting on the effect that racial reckoning has had in helping to close the social/racial wealth gap for Black people in America. 

Her scholarship examines the ways race, class and gender coalesce in American classrooms and political and social environments. Her work across activism, race, African American history and journalism have garnered national attention and awards.
