”¯In time for the start of the croquet season, Greenwich Historical Society invites area residents to learn more about the game Thursday, May 18, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. as part of the society”™s exhibit Sports! More Than Just a Game. Lee Kennedy, president of Greenwich Croquet Club, will share a brief history of croquet”™s origins, conduct a live demonstration and invite attendees to some hands-on practice in this version of shooting hoops. As a bonus, participants are invited to join Kennedy and members of the club to play on its Bruce Park courts May 19 and 20.”¯

“Greenwich Croquet is thrilled to collaborate with the historical society to help build awareness for the centuries-old sport that has a long and storied tradition in Greenwich,” Kennedy said. “Croquet is often portrayed as a leisurely summer pastime. It is actually more akin to ”˜a souffle of chess and billiards,”™ requiring cunning and teamwork, coupled with a sense of humor and humility. As such it attracts sporty types with a competitive mindset.”

“The May 18th”¯lecture and demonstration is open to anyone with an interest in croquet, including beginners and those who have only played backyard-style,” said Stephanie Barnett, the historical society”™s public programs manager. “Lee aims to make it a fun and educational evening that will entice participants to pick up a mallet and play.”

Croquet is featured in “Sports! More Than Just a Game” (through Sept. 3), which showcases how athletes in Greenwich, and surrounding communities, broke boundaries, tested limits and found common ground through athletic achievement.
