Building relationships through gift-giving

According to Greenwich Historical Society Museum Store Manager Barbara Johann, gifts that build connections and connectedness are the best: “It is a principle of gift-giving psychology that has withstood the test of time. Giving someone a gift that shows you value them as a person who has a connection to your world will help to create lasting bonds.”

Whether shopping for holiday presents, stocking stuffers or gifts to commemorate any special occasion − even a simple expression of thanks – Johann offers guidance in selecting presents that will endear you for years:

  • Think like the receivers. Ask yourself what they would like and try to understand how they will interpret your gesture. Very often it is not what the gift giver thinks. For certain occasions, do not hesitate to ask what the intended would like to have.
  • Don’t stress on finding the “perfect gift” but rather focus on why it’s being given. Show thoughtfulness, even in the way it’s presented. A handwritten note and nice packaging will add to the gift’s appeal and show you care.
  • Choose gifts that rekindle memories of shared experiences for emotional value and lasting joy. These do not need to be elaborate or expensive. A frame with a photograph of a vacation with family and friends can bring years of appreciation to the receiver.
  • It is not about the money. Even small gifts can be hugely beneficial in building a sense of connection and appreciation. Over the course of her long career in gifting in Greenwich, Johann has found that most people say the best gifts are the ones that make them feel joyful, loved and appreciated.

To build on its mission of greater community connections and a strong sense of place, the Historical Society Museum Store has a collection of Greenwich-themed gifts and books, several of which are exclusive to the store. “We live in a remarkable town that has so many opportunities for shared experiences,” Johann said. “Whether it’s picnicking on Greenwich Point, sailing on the Sound or concert- going in our many parks, discerning shoppers will find something to remind friends and loved ones of fun times together.”

Purchasers of $50 or more during December will receive a Greenwich-themed holiday ornament exclusive to the Museum Store, featuring such landmarks as Bush-Holley House, Toby’s Tavern and the Cos Cob railroad station.

All gifts are beautifully wrapped. Historical society members receive a 10% discount on purchases.
