THE WHY
•Now more than ever, it is important that we advocate for livable wages for human services workers so the people who care for New Yorkers can live with the dignity and financial resources they deserve.
•Government is the primary funder of human services nonprofits through government contracts. Although program costs have risen with inflation, the amount of funding in State contracts has not, leaving nonprofits struggling to cover costs. In light of the impact of federal funding cuts, New Yorkers will need services more than ever, and our sector will need resources to weather challenges ahead. The State must act to adequately fund human services nonprofits and provide true salary parity for their workers.
•Universal issues – like fair wages – affect individuals and individual organizations, but they weaken the entire sector and can only be solved through collective, coordinated advocacy.

◦Establish a “Blue Ribbon Commission” to examine the crucial role of nonprofit human services workers to New York’s economy and community health.
◦Pass Wage Board Legislation to create a human services wage board, which would investigate the pay gap between nonprofit and government human services workers and make recommendations for reform.
