The cinematic weekend of the bomb, a bombshell and Mickey Mouse’s breakthrough

“Steamboat Willie” is part of “Outdoor Film @ Garner Arts Center” Saturday, July 22.

What”™s the hottest cultural trend of this weekend? It”™s “Barbenheimer,” with Greta Gerwig”™s “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” — Christopher Nolan”™s take on J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man who helmed the Manhattan Project to build the atom bomb ”“ both bowing at the box office today, Friday, July 21. And while it may seem a stretch, the internet is buzzing with “Barbenheimer” double features as patrons buy tickets for both.

Well, why not? We like our intellectual meat, but then we have to have a little dessert, don”™t we? And don”™t forget:  Among Barbie”™s many iterations was her career as a physicist ”“ something the movie satirizes fondly. So she and Oppenheimer actually had a lot in common ”“ or not.

If you want to wait to savor “Barbenheimer” on another weekend, though, the Garner Arts Center in Garnerville is hosting an evening of “Outdoor Film” Saturday, July 22, with silent comedy shorts featuring Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd (new scores performed live by Hervé and Skyler Alexandre) and the first sound film appearance of Mickey Mouse in Walt Disney”™s 1928 “Steamboat Willie.”

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the show goes on at 8:30 p.m., rain or shine.
