‘CNG in a Box’ from GE
General Electric Co. unveiled a “CNG in a box” fuel pump for retail gas stations, allowing them to swiftly start offering “plug and play” service for vehicles running on compressed natural gas (CNG).
Fairfield-based GE developed the modular system with Peake Fuel Solutions, an affiliate of Chesapeake Energy Corp., with the companies unveiling the CNG in a Box at the National Association of Convenience Stores 2012 convention in Las Vegas.
Despite rapidly increasing interest in CNG as an alternative for vehicles, given comparatively low prices for the fuel, few stations in Fairfield County and Connecticut offer public pumps.
Measuring 20 feet long and eight feet wide, the CNG in a Box system compresses natural gas into vehicle-ready CNG on-site at a fueling station or industrial location. CNG vehicle drivers can then fill their tanks from a pump that has the same look and feel as regular gas and diesel dispensers.
