CL&P to begin interstate transmission upgrade
Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) announced Jan.9 it would begin construction on a new 345-kilovolt overhead transmission line stretching 37 miles in Connecticut as a part of a interstate transmission upgrade.
The project is still pending approval by Massachusetts and Rhode Island officials to construct another 38 miles between the states.
The interstate project is expected to bring a substantial upgrade to the transmission grid and address the system’s reliability constraints, according to a CL&P press release.
Connecticut’s portion will run between Lebanon and Thompson in the northeast corner of the state.
The project is reportedly worth $218 million and isn’t expected to substantially lower energy costs, according to The Stamford Advocate.
In addition, CL&P  proposed Jan. 8 a $47 million underground transmission line upgrade in Stamford to serve southwest Connecticut. If approved by the Connecticut Siting Council, construction would begin in 2014.
